About Me

I am a 40-something year old computer analyst working in the world of the mainframe and the confines of the corporate machine.
My favorite things to do are:
Sports & PC games
I don't really have a favourite colour.
I am living common-law after being divorced. I have a son and two daughters, plus a step-daughter. All are gems in their own way.

    Survivor Finale
Yes, I watched all three hours! Way too many commercials, but that's TV.
    The outcome: Sandra wins.
I am so glad Jon didn't win. He will go down as the biggest jerk there has ever been on that show. The response to the Grandma lie from the rest of the cast was rather forgiving. I'm surprised. I thought there would have been more backlash.
Lil got rocked during the questioning by the jury. This really surprised me. I think she was unfairly criticized except for the point that she was an outcast and likely didn't deserve to win for that reason.
Sandra handled things so masterfully. I don't know if it was by design or just plain luck.
I still think Rupert was the best survivor EVER. Unfortunately, he was too good.
I'm sure we'll be hearing more from many of the castaways in the months to come.
This was the best Survivor series since the first by far. The next should be real interesting, dubbed Survivor All-Star.

    A Hodge Podge of Musings
The Christmas crunch is in full swing now. Just look around at the local mall parking lots - full. I used to drive home past a major mall, but have not done so since the end of November, when it took me 20 minutes to get by a stretch that normally takes 3 or less minutes to do so. Of course, I'll wait until the last minute to do the shopping I need to do. Fortunately, my much better half takes care of almost all the Christmas shopping. I detest the crowds and the whole commercialism of the season. It seems to get worse every year.

Paul Martin has selected his new cabinet. Definitely a message to the voting public. The message: "This is not a continuation of Jean Chretien's government". Smart move Mr. Martin.

Mick Jagger is knighted?!? Never been a fan of his.

    MLSE keeps winning
Toronto Raptors and Maple Leafs both keep on winning. Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, which owns both entities, must be enjoying this seldom seen (at least in Toronto) success. $$$$$$
The Leafs are doing it with, as many players have said, paying attention to the little things. The effort has been far greater during their 8 game winning streak as well. They are in tough tonight against a St. Louis Blues team that is also playing well. Hockey around here, is finally on a high instead of the usual roller coaster the Leafs have put their fans through over the years. After the first period the Leafs are looking sharp in a scoreless tie.

The Raptors are on a 4 game winning streak. Well, I guess the trade has been a good one so far. I still think they need a big body in the middle but so far, getting out-rebounded every game hasn't hurt them. Why? Great shooting. Their shooting percentage has risen about 15% over what they have accomplished before the trade. Their assists are up around 7 per game! Tonight they face Lebron James and the Cavaliers. They started off slow but have come back at the half and trail by 3. The Cavaliers are very large in the middle and their early strategy of pounding the ball inside to those players has paid off. The second half should be entertaining...Go Raps!

    Commuting Bites!
This morning I spend 3 hours commuting to work. How ridiculous! Essentially, the cause was a stalled tractor trailer and a little weather/sunshine combination. I typically have an hour to hour and a half commute to work, depending on time of day. Yesterday, there were a few snow squalls -- 2 hours to work. And then this morning's debacle.
Of course, I get to work, and I'm bagged from the stress of the drive. (Morons on the road will be a topic of the future, I'm sure.) Thank goodness I had no meetings to attend this early morning. I like my job, but I hate the commute.
Fortunately, I have been able to work from home on occasion. At one time, I was doing it 1-3 days a week without impact to performance. Then new management comes along, and quietly poo poos the idea even though it is part of HR's overall vision. Work and Lifestyle - strike a balance. Hey, I'm trying. I do have a job that is computer related that allows me to "connect" from anywhere. I don't need face to face communication so I am not impacted by the work at home philosophy. In fact I would be MORE productive.
    1) Less interruptions with outside conversations...you know the loud talkers around the office you can't tune out.
    2) Less interruptions from people "just wanting to know" or "just letting you know". Send me an email and let me read it on my time. Now you have interrupted my train of thought, or made me feel compelled to help you out of whatever little problem you are facing.
I know that my sanity would be much better served working at home...no rushing out of here to pick up kids, or to be home for an early dinner because one of the kids has some event going on at 6.
Another thing, if I'm on the road a 6 a.m. and it takes me about an hour to get in, then why are there so many more cars on the road when I'm on my 1.5-2 hour commute home? There must be a great deal of people that don't put in a full day...or there are more salesman in this world than I care to think of.

So, the big trade with between the Raptors and Bulls finally goes down. All in all, this may be a big mistake for the Raptors.
They had to move Antonio Davis because he didn't want to be here and was playing like it. Jefferies, who cares? The big hitter for me is Jerome Williams. I doubt any of the players coming from Chicago will fill what he brings to the team, both on and off of it. It's not the stats. Donyell Marshall pretty much covers those and then some. It's the presence. The energy. The Raptors will miss this.
Sports, it's a business? This trade doesn't even work in salaries (unless there is some pickup of Rose's salary by the bulls). Looking at the salaries of each of the players, the Raptors come up a million bucks on the short end of the stick. So, in the end we lose money, rebounds, and likely get a player (Baxter) who is used to playing about 10 minutes a game and now likely will have no spot to play in for Toronto.
    Nice move Glen.
