About Me

I am a 40-something year old computer analyst working in the world of the mainframe and the confines of the corporate machine.
My favorite things to do are:
Sports & PC games
I don't really have a favourite colour.
I am living common-law after being divorced. I have a son and two daughters, plus a step-daughter. All are gems in their own way.

Man found dead after two years.

I'm perusing the news via the internet and see this little story. Hard to believe. Can you imagine how it must be to have no one (almost no one) looking for you if you suddenly stopped showing up places you normally do? Seems to me the group running the condo could have been a little more persistent in their "attempts" to contact him.

    Computer Woes - Again

Last week I attempted to reinstall Windows on my home PC. I've been having issues with blue screens since I got the motherboard replaced, so was trying some things. Updating the BIOS didn't relieve it, so I thought I would try a reinstall, before doing a format. Well, I got a message saying that a file could not be copied...so after trying several times, I skipped the file because that was one of the options. Then the install continued a bit and then died with a blue screen. Reboot was successful, but then another blue screen after the install had gone a little further. Rebooting was successful again, but this time suddenly the PC turned off. It has turned on since.
Long story, short - it's in the shop again. I'm awaiting word on what's wrong with it. I still think the memory stick is wonky somehow.

So, with no PC I've been watching TV (mostly the Olympics) and rented DVDs. Nothing earth shattering yet. We also rented some XBOX games. One advantage the console games have over PCs is you never have compatibility issues! Pop in the disc and play! No worries.
Still, I'd rather have the PC.

    LOL

I hope this doesn't offend anyone, but I found it funny...

B&B and I were watching Canadian Idol last night. It was Lionel Richie night. Great bunch of songs to choose from and most of them were done well. Anyway, this was the first night we've watched it and we both thought the contestants were much younger looking this time. I have a "habit" of spotting out gay folk when watching TV. I figured a few of the male singers were of that persuasion (not that there is anything wrong with that). B&B and I disagreed on one contestant. She thought he was and I thought he wasn't, or at least not as obviously feminine as others. So here's the part that made me laugh. The guy finishes his number and is sitting with the host smiling from ear to ear. B&B says, "Anyone that smiles that much is getting it up the
    A--! " I laughed, saying, "I guess that's why we don't smile much."

    Carry on.

    The Olympics

The Olympics will be starting up once again this week. I for one do enjoy tuning into the telecasts from time to time. I usually take in some of the opening and closing ceremonies and keep an eye on basketball, track, diving, swimming, wrestling, soccer, and gymnastics. Some others I may get into if Canada is involved is baseball. The rest I have little or no interest in.
Hopefully, there are some great moments to come for Canada, but the medal projections are fairly dim at the moment. Whatever the number, the golds will be the biggest highlights. There is something about the feeling one gets when the anthem is played at the Olympics. It is always a proud moment.
I find myself looking more forward to the World Cup of Hockey, however. Go figure...Canadian, eh?

    More Intelligent Leadership

A little background: Our busiest time of the month (barring major system problems) is the first 6 business days because we produce a multitude of reports to let the client(s) know how their systems are performing. The two most senior people of a particular platform (not the one I support) are on vacation right now. So as Murphy would have it, all these reports are due and the data collectors have decided to malfunction making producing the reports impossible until the data is recovered. Add to that there are some other system problems occurring that need attention right away.

Employee left behind: You know it's been pretty hectic trying to get all this done and take care of the problems too.
Manager: Yes, but make the reports your priority.
ELB: OK. You know, it probably isn't a good idea to have both those guys (the two most senior analysts) away on vacation at the same time.
Manager: So, what do you want me to do about it? Tell them.

Hello? Isn't that part of a manager's job to manage the vacation schedule to ensure there are no impacts to deliverables? I guess her part in this is to create the spreadsheet to post outside her office of the vacation schedule...oh, and to choose the pretty colours for each employee on the spreadsheet.

I guess not. That is now our responsibility also.

    Today's Crap

Got to bed a little late last night...no particular reason. I was up a good portion of the night with some heartburn and stomach upset. Yeah, yeah, poor baby. Anyway, the alarm goes off, and I don't move. I decide I need the extra hour and I'll work from home.

I get up and send the email to let my cohorts (who mostly couldn't care less) know that I will be home and how they can contact me. Cool.

No! Boss lady has a burr up her posterior this morning! She emails me "Why didn't I know about this?" (Because you don't need to know if all the onsite work is covered...as per discussions when working from home.) "There is a meeting scheduled that I wanted to introduce you to have you take over as project leader." (So what, you can't do that over a conference call? I know everyone involved in the project personally, except one.)

So I respond diplomatically that all is well and that I can conference into the meeting (I kinda forgot about it, but the scheduling of the meeting included a toll free conference number. One would guess that attendance physically is optional.) I also say if she thinks it is imperative that I be there, I can. -- She figures it's imperative. FINE!

Off I go to work...pissed off of course. So I get there, and everyone is asking why I'm there, when I sent an email saying I'd be working from home. I'm nice. Didn't say what I really wanted to say. So I say, "Forgot I had a meeting. C'est la vie." What I'd really like to have said is, "Control freak biatch wanted me in for a useless one hour meeting to show me how she takes minutes for it as a "project manager"".

After the one hour useless meeting, she says to me, "And that is what I do for this project." I thinks to myself, "Cool, you take minutes". She says, "I don't think I'll have time to do it with taking on the new people because of the reorg." GIVE ME A BREAK! You're dumping it because you can and using this as an excuse. Folks, there are a total of 6 people coming over to our department. Now if I add up the time that she already spends for every person in our department and divide by the same number of people, and then multiply that number by the 6 people (are you following?) I come up with 6. Yes, an additional six minutes a day on average. Now, if I were to include the time she spends talking about her kids, her vacation, and her family life, that would be about 18 HOURS! Okay, I'm exaggerating, but it's a helluva lot more time than she spends doing people management.

    Okay, I'm done.

    Happenings

Hey, I'm back! Been on a little R&R for a few days. Needed it. The weather for the most part turned out great. Enjoyed some fishing, swimming, and hiking.

Now, back to reality ==> work! I finally got through all the email at about 10:40 this morning. That task started at 7:00 this morning. Then I turn around and have a whole new crop of email to look after...terrific! Next, I had to "prepare" for a conference call meeting over lunch. Now, I'm on the call. Just got asked a question...and was able to answer it! Maybe men can multi-task, ladies. Doh! Just missed a question...oh well, at least some people got a chuckle out of it. Anyway, by the end of the day I should be caught up and ready to move on to the real work that needs to be done. Have a good one!
